History of NAPGCM
What is now a thriving international group of innovative professionals
started in New York in 1985 with a group of 100 human services professionals.
The National Association of Private Geriatric Managers was established
in 1986. By 2002 there were approximately 1800 members of NAPGCM.
As we grow and develop as a profession, the public will become
increasingly aware of the significant contributions that NAPGCM
members make in providing comfort and quality of life for the elders,
while relieving the stress of caregiving from their families.
Benefits
Professional Development:
Membership in the national organization offers members the opportunity
to participate in seminars to learn more about this new field, including
methodology, research, and information that help you better serve
your clients’ needs.
Annual
Conference: The Annual Conference has seminars on how to
‘do’ the business of care management. There are discussions
on time management, bookkeeping, hiring and keeping staff, advertising,
and protecting your business with insurance. It features nationally
recognized speakers, workshops, exhibits, and networking opportunities.
Code of Ethics: NAPGCM has
developed a Code of Ethics that defines the standards of practice
without which there would be little creditability. Members are encouraged
to write articles about their specialties and innovations, as well
as book reviews that appear regularly in professional publications.
These articles increase the visibility of our new vocation among
other human service professions.
Legislation: NAPGCM has
a representative (small lobby effort) in the Capital to follow the
progress of all bills that affect older Americans and their families.
Members are kept updated regularly about changing national policies.
Marketing and Public Relations:
NAPGCM promotes care management as a profession
by educating the public and the media about the emerging field of
Geriatric Care Management.
Membership Directory: A
national listing of members of NAPGCM is published annually. It
includes email addresses and websites of members, as well as each
member’s credentials. It is distributed to members of the
aging network, and may be purchased by consumers.
NAPGCM Publications: ‘Inside
GCM’ and the GCM Journal are both published on a quarterly
basis, and contain useful articles, updates, book reviews, ideas,
and opportunities in the field of Geriatric Care Management. Additionally,
there are brochures and workbooks available in the NAPGCM office.
There are opportunities to advertise your business or specialty
service to members of the aging network through the United States.
Why Join the South Central Chapter?
Our chapter covers a large geographical area. We have issues in
common that are not shared by other areas, such as large ethnic
populations and a multitude of older adults in rural areas. Meetings
amongst us offer the opportunity to discuss these issues and hear
suggestions from other chapter members.
It is not always possible to attend the national conference, either
due to expense or time. The chapter meeting is closer to your home
city, and lasts a shorter time.
The local conference is held in the spring. Attending the chapter
meeting offers the chance to network twice every year, once with
national members in the fall at the National Conference and again
in the spring with your fellow chapter members.
Mini-chapters in Dallas, Houston, and other cities meet for encouragement
and networking. There are few of us in this part of the U.S., and
little need to compete with each other. There is a greater need
to know who is where, and who specializes in what, so we can refer
to each other or share resources with each other. Most chapter members
are reluctant to refer to people who call themselves care managers
but are not members.
